Innovation is sparked by creativity. The world as we know it would not exist without it. Someone, somewhere, had the foresight to invent new technologies and processes that have improved our quality and quantity of life.
The question is, where does creativity start? Does it begin with a dream? Is there a light bulb above your head that appears out of nowhere? Is there anything you can do to rekindle your creativity and passion?
We are all creative, believe it or not. While we are all creative in different ways, we all have creative potential waiting to be discovered.
Finding Your Inner Light
Everyone has their rituals and routines for igniting their creativity, but here are seven techniques to get your creative juices flowing:
- Make a 100-item list. Make a list of 100 thoughts and ideas. They don’t have to be connected; jot down 100 thoughts that come to mind in one sitting. This may appear unsafe, but the goal is to develop unedited and uncensored ideas that can be used as a foundation for a larger concept. You can always filter the ideas afterward, so start with a number rather than quality. Also, remember this list is for you – who cares what anyone else may think?
- Engage all of your senses. Try something new that engages your senses. Attend a wine tasting, an art museum, a concert, or even a massage. You might develop a fantastic concept by lending your body and mind to new experiences.
- Surround yourself with words that are encouraging and motivating. Stories, positive affirmations, and motivational quotes are excellent ways to spark your imagination. After hearing inspirational stories or views from others, you can be encouraged to explore within yourself. My mother always puts affirmations on her bathroom mirror. I used to think this was a silly idea, but I realize it is conceptionally a genius idea as I have gotten older.
- Take a drive to a new place with some lovely scenery. When you’re alone in the car, you might be able to think more clearly. Turn off the radio and focus on the thoughts circulating in your mind. You already have a lot of creative ideas in your head; all you must do now is become more conscious of them!

- Experiment with the color yellow. Although it may appear counterintuitive, scientists feel that yellow stimulates creativity. The walls of architecture firms are frequently painted yellow. In my office, I have sunflowers all over the room. They bring me a sense of joy that I never knew existed!
- Make use of other people’s abundant resources. Many people enjoy talking and sharing their knowledge, so start them talking! Pose questions to them and let their answers direct your thoughts and ideas. Using the brainpower of others can help you come up with a unique and inventive solution. A great start would be to sit with some wise older people in a senior citizen’s home. Sometimes, people like to discard the elderly, but the truth is that they hold the key to a lot of wisdom.
- Take a slight pause. It’s time to unwind if you’re feeling stressed or under strain. After all, our brains require rest! It doesn’t have to be elaborate; it might be as simple as doing a Sudoku puzzle or taking a 15-minute walk. You will return more creative than ever after renewing your body and mind.
