Our Story
If You're In A Reading Mode:)
howdy!
Howdy, my name is Kenyetta, and I am the founder of Activityhobby.com! My story begins on the Southside of Chicago. I was an only child, so I had to use my imagination often. I had a strict (yet loving) grandmother. She made sure I was in the house or on our porch when the streetlights came on, and the other kids on the ‘block’ would find it funny when my grandmother yelled my name:) My wonderfully spirited mother was young, so my grandmother often helped, and I am forever grateful she did. I was not allowed to watch much TV; my grandmother would tell me to use my mind and the expensive encyclopedias she’d purchased to go on a journey (lol)! Oh, did I mention that she (and me, too, if I wanted to watch TV) never missed an episode of ‘Jeopardy!’ (R.I.P. Alex Trebek), ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and any other game show you could think of – we can’t forget ‘The Price Is Right’ with Bob Barker.
There were so many dangerous things in the streets I could have gotten into (and had access to), but my grandmother saw that I stayed grounded in books and taught me early on that education would be the key to any doors I wanted open. Of course, I did not want to hear that then; my 80-something-year-old grandmother reminded me that I was one of the first kids she would constantly hear say they were ‘bored.’
To ‘try’ to keep myself from being ‘bored,’ I would play school by myself, give kids who visited bags of paper filled with ‘assignments,’ and always create activities.
A bit About Me.
I grew up and became an award-winning humanitarian thanks to the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and The Spirit of Raoul Wallenberg Humanitarian Award. I’m a Penn State University alumna (due to my mother’s sacrifices and college-bound programs such as the University of Pennsylvania’s Upward Bound Program). I’ve worked in the news sector (so I know all about sensationalism), and I am a former print and radio journalist, publicist, and lifelong learner. I’ve been on the Internet for 26 years. Many people I know label me as a ‘tech geek’ (and they may be correct), but most importantly, I’m a mother to an incredible young woman who inspired me to create ActivityHobby.com. Coincidentally, my mom bought me my first refurbished Apple Macintosh computer in 1994 (with a used dot matrix printer – lol, and I was excited!). I later became a student in a web development program in 2000, & it is where I found my love for all things ‘Internet’ – building my first website in the same year (& fun fact; I’ve been with Stamps.com for as long).
We live in a dismal world filled with despair and chaos. There is good news out there, but we rarely hear about it. Therefore the idea of ActivityHobby.com came to fruition. It has become a passion project that we feel needs to be released ASAP (though it has been four long years in the making – releasing full-scale in ’25), with the state of the world being the way it is. It was not my next project up to bat, but as a long-time sufferer of clinical depression (high functioning) and seeing all the sadness and gloom around us these days, I felt it needed to be the project to focus on this time.
I’m an empath, and I care about the well-being of people. I’ve been in therapy for over a decade, & I’ve never met a stranger. I would have been ashamed to admit this years ago, but it’s my truth (and probably many people’s ‘truths,’ so never be embarrassed), and it has made me the person I am today. I believe in solid integrity and good karma (because I know you reap what you sow. Therefore, I watch what I plant).
The Inspiration. The need.
After having an in-depth conversation with my family- therapist-in-progress daughter, ‘Miss E.’ (as her wonderful clients call her) — who is presently in grad school, and also a Penn State Alumna, too (‘We Are…’), and I realized the importance of focusing on ‘the family.’ My daughter started as an Atmospheric Science major, so I wanted to find out why she changed majors, and she said, “Mom, I like to help children and people, and often how people turn out starts when they are young (in some cases).” I knew this was true because, like my mother and I (who’ve always been known for helping people), she had the same heartfelt traits for humanity. I can’t say I didn’t want her to stay an Atmospheric Science major, but I understood! I remember her first job was at the YMCA as an assistant camp counselor; they would tell me how much the children loved her. The same applied to the Sunday school class she helped teach alongside her grandmother. We are tired and fed up with seeing the ‘reality’ of the depressing news headlines. There’s good in the world, but it gets overshadowed by sensational stories (we are not saying ignore what is going on in the world around you — it’s SERIOUS, but a bit of a colorful and fun ‘escape’ would not hurt). So, this is our ‘brief’ story (please, drop us a line, we’d love to hear yours, too).
Thank you to the fantastic Activity Hobby supporters/team, and thanks to you for coming along with us on this colorful ‘vibrant’ happiness journey!
